Overall, the town experienced steady population growth over the period, with a slight decline towards the end. The demographic profile also shifted markedly: the population was initially dominated by middle-aged adults, but by 2011 it had become significantly older.

From 1951 to 1991, the town’s population rose substantially. In 1951, there were about 100,000 residents; by 1971 this had increased to roughly 150,000, and it reached a peak of 200,000 in 1991. However, in the final two decades the population fell somewhat, dropping to about 175,000 by 2011.

In terms of age composition, the 40–64 age group was the largest segment in 1951, accounting for nearly 45% of the population. By 2011 their share had declined sharply to around 20%. The 30–39 age group showed a similar downward trend: it rose slightly to about 20% in 1971 but then fell steeply to 10% by 1991, recovering only marginally to 12% by 2011. In contrast, the proportion of residents aged 65 and over grew steadily—from roughly 10% in 1951 to 25% in 2011—making it the largest age group by the end of the period. Meanwhile, the shares of the two youngest groups increased gradually: both the 0–14 and 15–29 age brackets were about 16% of the population in 1951, rising to 22% and 20% respectively by 2011.
